  • 1 package puff pastry Use a quality brand for best results.
  • 1 pound sausage Can use Italian or breakfast sausage.
  • 2 medium onions Caramelize for natural sweetness.
  • 1 egg For the egg wash.
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential seasoning.

Optional Ingredients

  • to taste cheese (like Gruyère) Adds cheesy goodness.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to about 1/8 inch thick and cut into rectangles (4x6 inches).
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon.
  • Add the caramelized onions to the skillet and mix until combined.
  • Place a spoonful of the sausage mixture on each pastry rectangle and sprinkle with cheese if desired.
  • Gently roll the pastry over the filling and pinch the edges to seal.
  • Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the rolls.
  • Place the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  • Let them cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, place in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10-15 minutes.
